so i’m not a bachelorette…

Well, I’d say it’s official: I was not chosen as a Bachelorette for the upcoming premiere season of The Bachelor Canada.

I auditioned in person at the InterContinental Hotel back in late Feb and I figured by April 1st I’d have heard if they were interested in seeing me for a callback. Naturally, I was pretty bummed about not making it. I’m fun, totes available, hilarious, cute, humble (ha!) and I think it would be a ridiculously amazing adventure to be a part of that show. I’ve watched Andrew and Jesse and Jason and Jake and whoever the hell else find “love” on the Bachelor, could it not have been MY turn to possibly win the heart of some handsome eligible Canadian man?! Of course, I took the whole rejection thing kind of personally, until today, when THIS happened:

brad smith bachelor canada cfl citytv rogers final rose

BRAD SMITH.

dammit. My former co-worker / current crush is the fucking bachelor. You have got to be kidding me. I met Brad last year when he strutted his ass in to my place of work and in to my heart. He is funny, handsome, 29, single, a former CFL player, bilingual, (hello this IS Canada) & mildly famous. He is EXACTLY who I thought the bachelor would be. But I honestly never thought it would ACTUALLY BE him.

Naturally, I am devastated for multiple reasons. a) Watching the season when it premieres this fall will just be straight up weird. It’s one thing to make fun of Ben’s stupid hair or Jake’s silly accent because in my mind they are not real people. Unfortunately I know this “real person”. Crap. There goes 90% of the reason I watch this show. The other 10% is in the small hopes that maybe, just maybe, the Bachelor will find his one true love.

Pretty sure it’s gonna be hard for him to find her when she’s sitting here writing this blog!!

b) I still believe the producers thought I was incredibly awesome and would have picked me for the show, but upon cross referencing Mr Smith’s facebook friends, my name would have been scratched off that list with a big fat Sharpie. *single tear* In one fell swoop, I lost my shot at love and my shot at Brad. Seriously?!?! Like, what karmic love god did I piss off? Have I rejected one too many “nice guys” and this is my payback?

At least I can take solace in the fact that I still believe I was top choice for Bachelorette. I guess like they say when your team doesn’t win the Grey Cup: There’s always next season.

best nails in town – Natalia’s Esthetics

I’ve always been in to polished, fancy nails. The ONE TIME I didn’t have time to re-do them and I went to school with *gasp!* unpainted nails, people noticed. I’ve got a kit full of gems & sparkles & stickers & goodies. A fridge full on colours from blues and greens to pinks and reds. Nails are just another fun way to accessorize your look. The latest trend on the polish scene is Shellac, which if you haven’t heard of (do you live under a rock?) is a hybrid gel polish. It goes on just like regular polish, however it “cures” in the little UV oven. It comes in a bunch of different colours so you can find your favourite. Best part about Shellac is it last for two weeks; no chips, no cracks, no lifting. Perfectly polished nails for 14 straight days. Unreal. Perfect if you’re a busy gal, or your hands are on display dropping off cocktails or holding a microphone ;) Especially fabulous if you’re going on vacation and want fab nails the whole time.

Well since I am uber busy / a hand model / going on vacay this week, I thought it would be quite apropos to visit a new spa in my hood. Natalia’s Esthetics opened almost a year ago. I met Natalia last year when she was working at a local salon. After years of working for someone else, she decided to become her own boss. She’s created a fun, feminine space where you can get a true one-on-one experience. Working out of her beautiful condo just off Queen West, Natalia specializes in nails, waxing and make-up.

shellac manicure pedicure waxing toronto queen west

Going to Natalia’s is like hanging out with a girlfriend; she’s friendly, approachable and totally relatable. Don’t expect to be asked “why you no have boyfriend?” but instead to have fun gossip about cute boys. While I got my Shellac on, we watched Cruel Intentions in the background. Natalia told me that since she opened, she’s been doing about 50% nails, 50% waxing, but with all the events that come along with summer right around the corner, she’s already been getting demand for make-up applications. She says Shellac has been absolutely huge since it came out. Women aren’t simply going for plain ol’ polish anymore and risk it getting chipped or smudged within a couple days.

shellac manicure toronto queen west natalia indart

I wanted of course some fun, festival inspired nails for my pending trip to Palm Springs and… COACHELLA!! So we chose to pair a fun bright orange polish with gold and bronze sparkles. Natalia is the only one I know doing this type of sparkle Shellac. Instead of using a sparkle polish, she uses loose sparkles to create the look. You can go as light or as crazy as you want with them, and the colour combos are endless!!

Like I said, she’s fun to be around and she’s great at her job. She’s so passionate about what she does, she opened her own place, THAT says a lot! And plus, she’s just cute-a-roo!

Natalia’s Esthetics is located on Phoebe Street, just a half block up from the corner of Queen and Soho (Peter). She plans on opening up her patio space too so on nice days, you can soak up the sun while you get pampered.  Email or call to book an appointment, you won’t be sorry you did! Just check out how cool my nails look! And they’re perfectly smooth as well ;)

Eye Love Brow & Beauty Bar

This winter you may have been these posters around Queen West. There were a few different faces featured..
toronto grooming brows eyebrows queen west spa beauty salon

Well a few days back I was strolling along the north side of Queen at Manning when I happened to notice a logo in a window I’d never seen before! What?! How could I have missed it?! Eye Love Brow & Beauty Bar. I quickly got in touch with Mary Dang, the owner of the new spot. She invited me in to try them out on Thursday.

eyebrows waxing threading shaping toronto queen west

Mary is a make-up artist with an amazing eye for symmetry. She used to work at a brow salon on the east side but really wanted her own shop. She opened Eye Love in November. She does everything brow related; from helping you find the right shape, maintenance, or helping rescue your brows from the edge of extinction. Her favourite thing is when a client comes in, haven practically given up hope on their brows. Mary gets them back to a place where that woman feels confident and fierce once again.

toronto beauty services queen west

Brows really are very important. We kind of underestimate them. But when we do our make up, we do EVERYTHING else on our face.. so why skip the brow? Mary says women tend to make too major mistakes: 1. Over Arching. If you create an arch that is too sharp for your face, you can easily get that “angry” look. Similarly, if you make them too rounded, they look clownish. 2. Straight Lines. While you want to avoid the Over Arch, you don’t want flat lines across your face. It looks bizarre but is still a common brow error.

Mary analyzed my brows as we had a little chat. We discussed the usuals, work, boys, weekend plans. She did her thing, and when we had finished one, she showed me the difference. Mary only used her tweezers to reshape the brows. She does have wax, but the tweezer is the best way to get in and not remove too many hairs. Every hair serves a purpose, she said. It’s true. Haven’t you ever been doing your brows when you’ve gone and pulled one out just to think “uh oh, shouldn’t have done that!”?! I know I have… A trained eye like Mary’s can see exactly which should stay and which should go.

Once we finished up, Mary showed me the final product.

toronto brows emergency fix queen west eye love brow bar

To me, they looked smaller, and a little less arched. And of course, the skin around them was all cleaned up! Mary said something that really surprised me, she said since my face so expressive, she’d taken the arch down along the top line of my brows so that when I get all talky and animated they look less.. “comical”. My words, not hers. She laughed. Comical, character, goofy. All words you could use to describe my face, don’t think I haven’t heard that before.. I thought it was so great that Mary had not just thought about what would suit the SHAPE of my face, but what would suit ME. I’ve had my brows done at various other places, and never has an aesthetician said to me, I took YOU in to consideration. That was the moment when I knew Mary really cared. Not just about her business but about the people that choose to come to her. Amazing.

toronto queen west eyebrows spa salon grooming services make up application

Mary is also a make-up artist. She offers make-up tutorials as well as full service brow grooming. Eye Love Brow & Beauty Bar is open Tuesday through Sunday by appointment only. Located on the second floor, it’s just above Valhalla. Of course, boys are welcome too! Mary says about 20% of business is currently men. And boys, if you want to keep confidential, no worries, Mary’s got you covered. You can book your appointments online, my favourite feature when it comes to beautifying!!

Battle of the Cities: Toronto vs Vancouver

“WHY would you EVER move to Toronto?!”

I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve been asked this question. I would have to say an average of two times a week, which doesn’t sound like much, but after the hundredth time, you start to go a little crazy.

“I bet it was for a guy!” Nope. Not true.  (and kind of rude of you to assume Mr Stranger!)  I came here for work, and for myself, and for a new adventure. This answer seems to appease people. Inevitably, the next question is:

“Which is better? Vancouver or Toronto?”

I’ve started answering this question with: “They are completely different, like apples & oranges. Do you like sushi or pizza? Pink or green? They really can’t be compared.”

Yes, of course I love Vancouver. And I love Toronto too. But they are each others yin & yang. Case in point: Two videos I want to share with you…

Toronto Tempo

This video was made by local videographer Ryan Emond. It started getting passed around facebook & twitter about 4 months ago. I instantly loved it. It IS Toronto.
Time lapse, night scenes, hustle & bustle, constant flow of people, transit, electronic music, diverse neighbourhoods. Toronto.

VS.

It’s You… Vancouver

This video was made by Tourism Vancouver & premiered last month. Of course, this video had a HUGE budget! It’s gorgeous. It’s SO Vancouver.
Mountains, trees, water, Jack Johnson-esque music, it’s almost in slow-mo! It’s chill and laid back. It’s all outdoors. It’s just straight up West Coast.

These videos are a very useful tool in the battle of Van vs TO. Whose hockey team is better? Who has better restaurants? Which city has better weather? Which city has more culture / diversity / live music / things to do? All debatable (except hockey ;) CANUCKS WHAT!!!)

The question is: Is one CITY better than the other? I have an opinion on the matter… but I’d much rather hear yours…

(p.s. Vancouverites: I know we have a hate on for Toronto, but here’s the scoop, the people of Toronto LOVE our city. The west coast / east coast hate on is NOT a mutual feeling, so let’s be a lil nicer to them)

Welcome Fuzz Wax Bar!

As I strolled along Queen the other day, I saw what was the former location of Come As You Are papered up with a sign saying “Fuzz Wax Bar – opening soon”. Being from Vancouver, I immediately knew what this was. See back in BC the concept is quite popular; instead of offering multiple services, just focus on one and make it perfect. We have brow bars, lash lounges, and more. The closest Toronto has to this is Blo blow dry Bar (King West, Bloor West, Yorkville). Enter Fuzz Wax Bar.

wax brazilian salon spa wax bar

Owners Jessica Frampton & Florence Gaven set out to create a unique Toronto experience. A place where you never needed to compromise anything when it comes to your lady bits. Quick? Of course! Professional? Absolutely! Clean? No need to even ask! Affordable? You better believe it. Florence moved from France recently, and when she asked her friend Jessica where to go for a wax, she recommended her usual place. But Florence was SHOCKED to hear just how expensive it was! And it’s true. I am also baffled as to why a Brazilian wax costs over $50 at most Toronto salons. Jessica and Florence did a lot of research over the past 8 months while preparing to open Fuzz. An avid waxer, Jessica wondered just why her appointments were taking so long. She asked the aesthetician exactly that, and she got an honest answer: “We are supposed to make you feel like you are getting your money’s worth”. Really?! Wouldn’t you rather be in & out?! After all, a wax isn’t meant to be painful but it certainly isn’t the most pleasant of experiences either.

The decided this would be their “anti-concept”, and instead open a wax bar that suits the customers needs. Fuzz Wax Bar has taken a lot of extra steps to make sure this happens. Since Jessica’s background is in marketing & PR and Flo was in the film industry, they knew they needed to hire some top quality aestheticians to be their experts on the floor. All of their waxers have at least 7 years experience, and the Lead Aesthetician has developed a training program so no matter who does your wax, it will be done the same way, making these ladies specialists. A great benefit of this is that is allows the customer to book around their schedule, not the aestheticians.

toronto wax brazilian queen west bikini

Fuzz Wax Bar is not using strip wax; instead they use hard wax. If you’ve been waxed before, you’re likely used to the strip wax. This is when they use a hot wax on your skin, then go over it with a strip (usually fabric) then pull it off. Strip wax has a tendency to stick to the skin and can cause rips. Hard wax, on the other hand, is applied the same way, but it only bonds to the hair. After it cools a bit, the waxer will pull it off, no “strips” needed. Jessica & Flo played around with a lot of different brands and decided on Berodin, a product from France that is new to Canada, so new in fact they might be the only team in Toronto to offer it. Fuzz also does vajazzling, using Swarovski crystals. I’ve yet to try the vajazzle, but it sure looks like fun. All of the products carried at Fuzz Wax Bar are high-end. From the wax to the crystals, to the pre and post care as well. They carry brands like I Love My Muff, PFB Vanish, and Betty Beauty.

aftercare lotion vajazzle toronto queen west wax bar

Now let’s get to the goods, the wax itself! I met my waxer, Jordana, and she made me very comfortable. This was by no means my first Brazilian, but it’s always nice to have your aesthetician put you at ease. I mean after all, she is going to be taking a peek down there, you should probably like her. The room was clean and Jordana showed me everything before we got down to business. I’ll spare you the details, cause, well, you can email me if you really want ‘em, but overall the experience was pleasant. Jordana was in & out, quick yet cautious. The hard wax is definitely not what I am used to, but the pain factor is no different in my opinion. Jordana and I chit chatted during the process, alternating topics between what she was doing and the basic “getting to know you”s. I always find it goes by quicker when you chat, and you’re a little more distracted. Of course, there is NO DOUBLE DIPPING at Fuzz Wax Bar. The fact that this is something we actually have to worry about when choosing a spa is shocking, but any respectable shop would NEVER, ever do that. So no need to worry, sanitation and health is the FIRST priority of the aestheticians at Fuzz.

wax bar toronto supplies hard wax soft wax

Something that makes Fuzz Wax Bar completely unique from any beauty bar I’ve ever been to is their membership service. There are 3 different types; The Fuzz Fan ($15/mo) which gives you up to 50% off all wax bar services, The Fuzz Faithful ($35/mo) which is good for one Brazilian a month, and of course you will receive member pricing on all other waxes, and The Fuzz Fanatic ($55/mo) which is good for three different waxes a month. Of course, you can just do a drop in, but if you’re going to make Fuzz Wax Bar a regular stop on your beauty routine, a membership would certainly be the way to go. I haven’t touched on it much here simply cause I am no expert on the subject, but Fuzz does also provide waxing services for Men (yep, we’re talking Manzilian people!)

You can book your appointments online (so convenient!) and check out Fuzz Wax Bar‘s website for more info. Happy Waxing!

a perfect day… almost

Today was “thiiiiis” close to being absolutely perfect!! I had an interview for Rogers, I ate chicken & waffles for the first time in my life, I had drinks with a BFF, and dinner with a group of amazing people. How do you make that day even better?! You go to Two Cats, where all the cool kids party.

Tonight at Two Cats, I was at the bar, when myself & my two gfs noticed a couple young men looking at us. This is not that unusual, with the exception that one of these men was veeeeeeeerrrry handsome. Like right up my alley kinda handsome; tall(ish) dark hair, blue eyes, muscley. 100% my type. So after a lil liquid courage, I made friends with said man. and WHOA! my connection amplified like mega! AJ got sexier by the minute. We talked, danced, flirted for about 2 hours. Eventually all my gfs left and I was left alone with AJ and his friend. We continued dancing, canoodling, being overall amazing. Of course the thought of “should I go home with this guy” entered my mind?! But I thought, no, I’m so so so so excited to see him again, I’d rather say goodnight and plan another time to see each other. We shared a fantastic kiss on the d-floor. That was the moment that I was like “shaaazam!! this guy is perfect.” We laughed at the same things, we smiled at the same jokes, we got along so well. Do you know how often I meet someone who makes the same ridiculous faces as me?! NEVER!! He did.
I really felt like I had met someone special. I even told him that, I said “AJ, you are easily the coolest, funniest person i’ve met in Toronto“. He shrugged it off like ‘no big deal’, ‘no I’m not’. I should have listened to him then…

We left Two Cats and walked out on to King West. We didn’t even get ONE BLOCK before a girl stopped him in the street and was screaming out of excitement that he was her friend’s boyfriend. BOYFRIEND?! Pretty sure this guy is single. I stood over to the side, feeling kind of silly, as I listened to this girl introduce AJ to all her friends as “Lalala’s boyfriend”. I even heard the word FIANCE. *gag* I was so caught off guard. here I am, relegated to the side, watching the most amazing dude I’ve met in months socialize with his girlfriends friends. There was some comment about me, like “who is that?!” and it was presumed that I was AJ’s friend’s date, which in my state of panic I agreed with. After what felt like an eternity (3 minutes) we escaped this situation. We walked away and I immediately asked AJ if he had a fiance named Lalala. He said “no”. So I chalked it up to a case of ex bf-gf situation. I had my card in my pocket, still wondering if i should give it him. We walked a few more blocks, and when it came time for me to go my way home, I asked again, do you have a gf name Lalala, he said “yes”. ugh. I was so upset. I said, well, that’s a shame, it was so nice meeting you, I’d love to see you again, but, nope. And he was like uh huh.

It’s 3am, and I feel incredibly cheated. I feel like I met a serious candidate for boyfriend material, but it turns out the position has already been filled. I walked the rest of the way home angry, mad and upset. I am mad not only because I feel cheated but because somewhere out there on this saturday night, AJ’s girlfriend is none the wiser that he met me. She doesn’t know that I had a HUGE crush on him, that I thought he could be someone special, someone unique that would bring excitement & laughter to my life; who I was really looking forward to seeing him again. I am mad about that. I am choked that he would waste MY time like that. As if he was the only guy at the bar last night. I’m sure if I’d had my eyes out I could have found a nice guy, who is actually SINGLE. But what I am even more mad about it that I have once again lost faith in guys. Is this how they behave?! is this what it acceptable and normal?! If their gf isn’t around they can act as they please?! ugh. This is why i’m 28 and single. Because when I meet a guy he is a liar. And IF I meet a guy who’s cool, I can’t trust him.

so I guess it’s back to the drawing board… dating sucks.

we went to the Fox & Fiddle on a Saturday night, sounded like fun. we made a 9pm reso for karaoke, which started at 10pm. ok, the dj’s INTRO music started at 10. the show started at like 1040pm. he was soooo in to himself it wasn’t even funny. like i am all for pumping up the crowd, but puh-leeze, 40 minutes of your iTunes megamix is like, ridiculously boring. plus, he was a total prick. he picked on my group the whole time. from our song choices to our outfits to our dancing to actually making comments on the assumed sexuality of my friends. ridic. i get why he was mean to us; the last time he saw a group of girls this pretty was in high school, as our boyfriends were beating him up. whatever. his lameness was not about to ruin our fun.

we heard some beautiful renditions of Gloria Gaynor, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder, NKOTB, Garth Brooks & more! usually i sing my karaoke go-to: Alanis Morrisette “you outta know”, but since it was my bday i wanted to rock something a lil more light hearted. here is the video of me & my stunning back up dancer Lexi K-I-L-L-I-N-G  I-T! **disclaimer**  i am not a good singer. this is for FUN, so please keep the haterade to yourself. xo
